Changing Your Name After Marriage

Changing your name after marriage is completely optional. Here is a simple checklist if you are changing your name, once your marriage is registered.

1. Get your Official Marriage Certificate

The commemorative certificate you sign on the day, isn’t the one organisations will accept for a name change. After your celebrant lodges your marriage legal paperwork, and your marriage is registered, you’ll need to pay for the official certificate from your states Birth, Deaths and Marriages.

2. Start with the big Government records first

Starting with the big ones is helpful, as many other organisations may ask of these are proof of identity. For example:

  • Driver Licence

  • Passport

  • Medicare

  • My Gov Portal and My Gov identity

  • ATO and tax file number

3. Update your financial records

  • Bank accounts and credit cards

  • Superannuation

  • Health Insurance

  • Car, home and contents insurance

  • Any loans or mortgages

4. Everything else

  • Employer records

  • Utility accounts, like electricity, gas, water, internat

  • Medical, dental, and other records

  • Social media and accounts

  • Car registration and roadside assistance

  • Your Unique Student Identifier (USI), if required.

It might not be the most romantic part of being newly married, but ticking things off one by one makes it manageable. Take it at your own pace, and enjoy being married!
